Shower, Bathtub, or Combination? Some of the Pros and Cons

Are you thinking of replacing your bathtub with a shower? Perhaps you want to update your bathtub and shower combination unit and are considering separating these features? Or maybe you want to make your bathroom more luxurious by upgrading the tub? Today's homeowner has a myriad of choices when it comes to the showers, bathtubs, and combinations in their home.

To help you find the right balance, here are a few pros and cons of each style.

The Pros and Cons of Bathtub and Shower Combos

Likely one of the most common things to see in any bathroom is the combination shower and bathtub unit. There are two primary factors that drive this popularity. First, it's a space saver, resulting in the most efficient usage of bathroom space. Second, it can also be a money-saving move because you're only paying for one unit and they are easy to find.

The bathtub and shower combination unit can also be one of the most universal styles to appeal to the widest variety of future homebuyers. Most homeowners — in particular, families — generally want at least one bathtub in the home. But a combination style allows you to have both a shower and bathtub, which can grow with the family's changing needs.

However, while a combination fixture might provide plenty of practical benefits, it doesn't give you the most aesthetic options. Fulfilling the needs of both a shower and a tub limits your style choices, locations, and configurations.

The Pros and Cons of Standalone Bathtubs

Even though showers have grown more popular, the bathtub is still considered a luxury that many want. They desire the option to soak in a bubble bath or enjoy jetted tubs to soothe muscles. The standalone bathtub is also a modern decor touch that can serve as the perfect centerpiece to the room. Tubs come in many shapes and sizes, ranging from modern to vintage claw-foot baths, so they provide more choices.

As with any element that could be considered as a luxury, though, you must have the budget and space to support it. The addition of a standalone tub could require more floor space than a bath and shower combination because it often needs maneuvering space on all four sides. You're also likely to find that you need to include a separate shower unit in many bathrooms.

Finally, a bathtub generally doesn't offer the same accessibility as a shower unit, so it may not be appropriate for older homeowners or buyers. If this is a concern, consider a walk-in bathtub to correct for this limitation.

The Pros and Cons of Standalone Showers

Should you get rid of the bathtub entirely and just put in a shower? More and more people are choosing this option today. By freeing up space within the bathroom's confines, you can get a larger and more luxurious shower. Or you can make a smaller bathroom feel larger and more open — especially with modern glass doors and open showers.

Showers are also usually the most accessible of the three types of bathroom units. While all standalone showers generally have a small threshold to overcome, some units come with no threshold at all and provide the best safety and convenience.

As mentioned, though, before ripping out your bathtub, be sure your home has at least one conveniently located tub for future needs. Tubs are usually installed in family bathrooms, so the master bath is a great place to enjoy the option of a specialty standalone shower.
